My understanding is that Missouri's governor, Matt Blunt, is a Republican. He will appoint a Republican to replace McCaskill. That can't possibly be a good thing.

Jay Nixon and his team had the opportunity. Temporiti wanted to see something like this. Some old guard counties wanted help in changing. But Nixon and his staff acted like they wanted to do this while privately saying 'screw those county people, they're hillbillies.' Jay is only out for himself.

In the 20th legislative district, I swear the Republicans ran a mannequin and still won. Time for the Callaway county Democratic "power brokers" to step aside and find the candidates that will not only run, but put the time into running.

Yea Rebecca had the same issue, luckily she had built some political capital with locals. She sent out a xeroxed letter from a local Republican rejecting the off-topic attack mailings and I think it was quite effective.

Of course re-elections are always easier...

The state still is running campaigns like it always had. Get behind one candidate and the rest be damned. I agree with Peggy. We need the state to concentrate on these local and regional races. We need to get some of these county committees to help elect Democrats to office, not to just have wienie roasts in the summer

Until the Missouri Democratic Party adopts a 114 County Strategy [read 50 State Strategy] the prospects for change in out-state are dim. I worked on a state house campaign. We had a terrific candidate with issues which should have resonated running against someone whose only platform was that he'd lived in the area for a hundred years and would, "listen to the voters." We got killed in the last two weeks of the campaign by a series of vitriolic mailers--about 8 of them--that hit voters' mailboxes just about every other day. We couldn't fight back because while we raised much more money than did the opponent, these mailers were paid for by the State Republican party. We didn't get a dime from state.

@jessie DNC chair doesn't require giving up her senate seat. Someone else would handle the day-to-day running of the Democratic party. The chair of the DNC is symbolic when there's a sitting Democratic president.

I suppose its possible that McCaskill would be appointed to a real job in the administration. Trading McCaskill for Baker as my senator would be awesome. I have no idea what McCaskill would do in the administration. She was an auditor and prosecutor, she doesn't seem to have a specialization that'd be handy for an administration. Though Powell is a favorite for Dept. of Education, and what does he know about that? So who knows. :)

Nice thought, don't see it happening. Claire didn't deliver Missouri and I'm not sure she's got the cajones to lead the whole Dem party. Definitely not in the league of Howard Dean.

I hope Baker is a fly on the wall in Leutkemeyer's office. I wonder if he's got enough money to buy happiness among his constituents, besides their votes.

Yea this was pretty much my reaction. Missouri losing its bellwether status in voting for McCain while Indiana (of all places!) votes for Obama shows that Missouri is really being left behind. At least when Missouri voted for Bush twice we did it when everyone else was joining us at the kool-aid table.

The couple bright spots up here was that Adair county reelected McClanahan against a very shady campaign. And student turnout was really unprecedented, 1300 voters at the on-campus-only precinct (voting Obama something like 73%). I assume this is why Adair county voted for McCain by only a 100 votes, which made Adair a white county on the dailykos board. That felt good. :) Kerry lost Adair by more then 1000, Gore by almost 2000.
